Down into the Dark

William Adler
Mar 2, 2021

When you were swallowed by the warm humidity,
and the roar of the stadium crowd,
a pale-faced, gawking, gibbering mob
with flags and buntings
all -red, white, and blue.
You knew that they would not remember you.

Afraid and reluctant,
cheering your journey
down,
into the dark.

Then oceans away,
you-
detached and dreaming of ice cream
and cool carpet underfoot
hear those hucksters-
heroic in their mien
worshiping the avatars of your tribe,
worshiping a myth,
while they commit your future to
to the dark,
oceans away.
